Brazil projected to add 10GW of power generation capacity in 2025

Bnamericas

Brazil is projected to add 10GW of electric power capacity in 2025, according to regulator Aneel.

The figure, which considers only centralized generation projects, is in line with the growth registered in 2024 and the previous year.

Solar power will drive the growth in 2025 with 4GW. Projects such as Irecê, Brotas de Macaúbas, Morro do Cruzeiro, Serra da Babilônia and Mauriti are scheduled to come online next year.

Approximately 2.5GW of wind power is programmed to start operations next year. Projects include Serra da Almas, Casa Nova, Ventos de Santa Eugênia/Serra da Mangabeira, Babilônia Centro, Serra do Assuruá and Kairós.

Thermoelectric capacity is expected to contribute 2.4GW, with projects including the GNA II and Novo Tempo Barcarena plants.

Biomass capacity is projected to add 883MW. Central Geradora Suzano, Bazan and Cedro are among the undertakings due online in 2025.

Overview

Brazil currently has total installed capacity of 208.3GW, according to Aneel.

Hydroelectricity accounts for 103.2GW, followed by thermoelectric (46.6GW), wind (32.7GW), centralized solar (17.1GW), small hydro (5.8GW), nuclear (2GW) and mini-hydro (855MW).

Projects authorized by Aneel – ones yet to be built or under construction – total another 162GW, including 128GW of solar, 23.7GW of wind, 7.7GW of thermal, 1.35GW of nuclear, 1.2GW of small hydro, 260MW of hydro that is not small or mini, and 11MW of mini-hydro.
