Brazil reveals plan to invest US$7.35bn in urban mobility, drainage, water supply and sewage
The Brazilian government announced plans to invest 41.2bn reais (US$7.35bn) reais in projects in cities as part of the PAC program.
Investments will be in urban mobility, drainage, water supply and sewage and the resources will come from the federal government and the workers compensation guarantee fund (FGTS).
In total, 872 proposals from 707 municipalities were selected and they are expected to generate more than 535,000 jobs.
“This is a great role for the new PAC. The generation of employment, income and boosting the Brazilian economy," cities minister Jader Filho said in a statement.
Of the total, 9.9bn reais will be allocated to urban mobility projects in medium and large cities, benefiting 58 municipalities in 24 states.
These projects include the expansion and upgrade of public transport systems such as subways, urban trains, light rail services, bus corridors and exclusive lanes. The objective of the investment is to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable urban and economic development. “These investments prepare our cities to face the challenges of climate change,” said the minister.
Urban drainage will receive 15.3bn reais in 190 municipalities, including 6.5bn reais for Rio Grande do Sul state which in May suffered unprecedented flooding. Approximately 4mn people will benefit directly from these projects, which aim to reduce the risks and impacts of natural disasters.
Meanwhile, drinking water projects will receive 5.9bn reais in 300 municipalities in 24 states, while sewage projects will receive 10.1bn reais in 287 municipalities in 25 states.
