Brazil seeks bilaterial partnerships to expand geological knowledge

Brazil's geological service, SGB, is looking to form partnerships with authorities in several other Latin American countries with the aim of fostering greater innovation in its processes and expanding geological knowledge of the country.
As part of its strategy to enhance international cooperation, SGB has submitted proposals for the signing of future bilateral agreements with the geological services of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, El Salvador and Cuba.
Brazil's plans were presented during the XXX Ordinary General Assembly of the Ibero-American Geological and Mining Services Association (ASGMI), held from March 31 to April 5 in Peru.
At the assembly, SGB’s director of geology and mineral resources, Valdir Silveira, announced the launch of the 10-year basic geological mapping plan, known as PlanGeo, for 2024 to 2035, which sets out guidelines for expanding and updating geological knowledge across the national territory.
"The initiative aims to support public policies, promote mineral research and reduce the areas that are still unexplored. The plan prioritizes strategic regions with potential for mineral resources and sustainable development," Silveira said in a statement.
Brazil’s collaboration with regional mining leaders such as Chile and Peru forms part of a broader effort to improve geological understanding. Currently, less than a third of Brazilian territory is covered by any form of mineral data.
