Brazil trader resumes electricity exports to Argentina
Brazilian energy trader Tradener resumed electricity exports to Argentina this week.
Sourced from coal and natural gas-fired plants, the energy is being delivered to the neighboring country via the local wholesale power market administrator Cammesa.
Initially, around 900MWa/d (average MW per day) will be supplied, which is expected to rise to up to 1,200MWa/d.
Tradener is also authorized to export electricity to Uruguay.
According to its CEO Walfrido Avila, Brazil received more than 2bn reais (about US$400mn) in 2023 from exporting power to neighboring countries.
Avila believes it is unlikely that Brazil will export hydroelectric-sourced power in 2024.
"That would depend on the convergence of a series of factors, such as water surplus in our reservoirs and an increase in Argentina's demand for energy," he said in a press release.
According to a survey carried out by BNamericas, around 60 energy traders in Brazil have been authorized to export and/or import energy since January 2023.
Almost all the cases involve Argentina and Uruguay, with the exception of Âmbar Energia, which in December was authorized to import electricity from Venezuela.
