Brazilian ISPs Brisanet, iez! make forays into cloud, 5G

Brazilian internet service providers Brisanet and iez! telecom continue to expand beyond pure broadband services in a bid to increase client retention, cross-sell and leverage synergies with existing services.

Brisanet, which launched 4G/5G mobile operations in mid-2024, is now entering the cloud computing and datacenter segment.

The second biggest ISP in Brazil, the company operates a tier 3 datacenter in Fortaleza, Ceará state, from where it will provide BrisaCloud, a cloud portfolio for government and for companies from different sectors.

As in the case of its mobile operations, Brisanet's cloud strategy is aimed mainly at capturing opportunities serving companies based in the northeast region of the country.

Brisanet said the initiative “meets the growing market demand for solutions that eliminate the need for local physical infrastructure, reducing costs with server acquisition, maintenance and operation.”

“The product takes companies in the northeast to a new technological level, providing resources previously restricted to large [urban] centers at an affordable price, bringing performance and security,” said Jordão Estevam, commercial director of telecom at Brisanet, in a release.

Brisanet is not alone in betting on cloud services in the northeast of Brazil.

Last month, Brazilian operator Um Telecom announced the creation of a datacenter business unit called Atlantic Data Centers to offer services to companies from its upcoming tier 3 facility in Recife, Pernambuco state.

Internet provider iez!, for its part, is making its first forays into 5G.

The ISP belongs to the local Greatek group, which has for 27 years operated in in the telecoms infrastructure market, and won a regional 5G lot in Brazil's 2021 auction.

This week, iez! announced it selected Huawei as the main provider of antennas for its 5G network, as reported by Teletime.

Coincidentally, the Chinese vendor is also the provider of Brisanet's mobile network.

iez!'s mobile coverage license encompasses the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. The 5G service is expected to be launched soon, on a gradual basis. Initially, the contract with Huawei contemplates 100 cities in the three states.

iez!'s focus for 5G is mainly on FWA, or fixed wireless broadband, for consumers (B2C), companies and ISPs (B2B), as well as for public networks and schools.

The company is also targeting private networks for enterprises.

Last year, iez! announced a contract with DigitalBridge's Highline to install 5G antennas in at least 1,000 towers.
