Brazilian mining watchdog launches consultation on 2024-27 regulatory plan

Brazilian mining regulator ANM has started a consultation period on the strategic regulatory plan for the sector for 2024-27.

Stakeholders interested in commenting on the ANM's plan have until November 16 to respond to a survey on 11 areas of action for the regulator. It can be accessed here, in Portuguese.

ANM asks stakeholders, on a scale of one to 10, what the agency's priorities should be for the next four years. The topics include mine safety, sustainable practices, strategic minerals and socioeconomic conditions in affected mining municipalities.

All stakeholders can participate.

“It will be the first time that the agency has created a strategic plan with social participation, which will enhance the process and help ensure that the agency’s actions are in line with the sustainability agenda," ANM’s deputy executive superintendent, Cristine Pontes, said in a release.

M&A 

Meanwhile, the mining sector in Brazil saw an M&A transaction completed this week.

Australia’s Meteoric Resources, announced that it concluded the sale of its Juruena gold project in Mato Grosso state to Keystone Resources.

"The parties agreed a US$20mn sale of the Juruena Gold Project in June 2022, with the first tranche of US$2.5mn having been received by Meteoric in October 2022. Following issues with the sale in April 2023 leading to a termination of the transaction the parties subsequently collaborated privately and amicably towards a resolution and have now brought about a successful completion on the original terms, with payment of the balance of US$17.5mn to Meteoric and smooth transition of the project to Keystone control," Meteoric said in a statement.

The proceeds raised from the sale of the project in Mato Grosso state will be used by Meteoric for to invest in its Caldeira rare earth initiative in Minas Gerais state.
