Brazilian senators to debate modernization and sustainability of mining

The Brazilian senate’s infrastructure committee will hold a session on Thursday to debate the modernization and sustainability of the mining industry.

Senators and mining stakeholders will analyze issues such as the review of mineral exploration concessions, socio-environmental impacts, the protection of affected communities, and the alignment of regulations with the current economic and social reality, according to a senate release.

“The mining sector plays a strategic role in Brazil’s economic and social development. Given its importance for job creation, foreign exchange and tax revenue, as well as its contribution to infrastructure and basic industries, it is essential to review and debate the regulatory framework of mining, with a view to promoting advances in governance, sustainability, legal certainty, and the sector's competitiveness,” said Confúcio Moura, a senator of the centrist MDB party, who is organizing the debate.

The session is expected to be attended by Raul Jungmann, president of mining association Ibram; Paulo Roberto Castellari Porchia of Appian Capital Brazil; Letícia Botelho, a lawyer specializing in mining; and representatives from the mines and energy and environment ministries, among others.
