Brazil's antitrust agency backs sale of Oi datacenters to Piemonte
The technical area of Brazilian antitrust agency Cade has recommended that its board approve the sale of five datacenters by Brazilian operator Oi to Piemonte Holding for 325mn reais (US$64.2mn).
The sale of the assets was agreed on November 26, along with the sale of Oi’s telecommunication towers to Highline do Brasil, which is controlled by the US fund Digital Colony.
Cade experts believe that the acquisition will not result in any significant market concentration in the datacenter segment and recommended approval of the deal without caveats.
According to Cade's assessment, Piemonte will have a market share of around 10%, with a datacenter area equivalent to 12,340m2, up from the current 5,200m2.
Oi has been in a judicial recovery process since June 2016 and is undergoing a major restructuring process that includes the divestment of various assets.
Next on the list is Oi’s mobile operation. The auction of this unit is scheduled for December 14 and the binding offer of 16.5bn reais jointly presented by Claro, TIM and Vivo is expected to be declared the winner.
