Brazil's CSN partners with Petrobras for green hydrogen plant

Brazilian steelmaker CSN signed a protocol of intent with federal oil firm Petrobras to build a green hydrogen plant in Paraná state.

"The signing of this protocol of intent is aligned with CSN's medium and long-term decarbonization plan and reflects the group's commitment to sustainability and the transition to a low-carbon economy. To achieve the goal of reducing carbon intensity by 20% per ton of crude steel by 2035, CSN seeks synergies across all its operations and integrates its decarbonization efforts with strategic partnerships, accelerating positive impacts throughout its value chain," CSN said in a statement.

"The cross-sector cooperation between CSN and Petrobras highlights the importance of strategic partnerships in addressing the challenges of accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy. This collaboration between the companies promotes the sharing of information, experiences and technologies, strengthening CSN group's position as a leader in sustainability and innovation in the sectors in which it operates," it added.

Steelmakers are exploring solutions from various angles to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2023, Petrobras created a new division for energy transition and renewable energy. This division intends to invest in assets related to the energy transition and also aims to support private sector initiatives in their emissions reduction plans.
