Brazil's Dataprev hires Oracle for sovereign cloud in its datacenters

Brazilian state-owned company Dataprev hired Oracle for the provision of a sovereign multi-cloud data platform.

Dataprev is responsible for, among other things, the management and processing of all social security data and pension benefits in the country.

Contract values were not disclosed. Under the terms of the agreement, Oracle will set up its Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer (DRCC) solution within Dataprev’s datacenters.

The platform allows customers to deploy an Oracle Cloud region in their own sites. According to the US company, DRCC offers the same experience as Oracle's public cloud regions, including access to more than 100 of the same cloud services.

This is Dataprev’s second such cloud services contract. In June, the Brazilian company inked a multi-cloud agreement with China’s Huawei. Both initiatives fall under its plan to expand capacity and data interoperability, the company said.

“Dataprev’s goal is to have a broad technological offering, to quickly meet the many and different demands of customers and society,” Dataprev’s president Rodrigo Assumpção said in a press release.

Assumpção said that the sovereign multi-cloud strategy aims to support the construction of the national data infrastructure, improve databases and ensure rapid response and interoperability between different public entities.

“Speedy deliveries become especially important with the increase in extreme weather events, which increasingly challenge public policies, as we have seen in Rio Grande do Sul.”

The DRRC model includes all of Oracle’s cloud services for deployment in one or more physical locations chosen by the customer, in this case, in Dataprev’s datacenters, and in compliance with security, regulatory, low latency and data residency requirements, the release said.

The Brazilian company's datacenters are located in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasília. All sites have tier III certification from the Uptime Institute.

Oracle has two public cloud regions in Brazil: Brazil East, launched in August 2019 and covering São Paulo city, and Brazil Southeast launched in May 2021, covering Vinhedo in São Paulo metropolitan region.

The East region provides interconnection to Microsoft Azure cloud, whereas the Southeast one allows for interconnection with Google Cloud.

In addition to the two existing regions, Oracle is said to be working on another two in Brazil.

AWS

Adding to Microsoft and Google, Oracle closed a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to have its Oracle Cloud offerings on Amazon's cloud platform, completing the trio of big public cloud providers as partners.

The alliance with AWS was announced by Oracle’s chairman and CTO, Larry Ellison, during the Oracle Cloud World event in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Like the agreements with Google and Microsoft, it will allow placing Oracle’s hardware inside AWS cloud facilities.

The only cloud region AWS operates in Latin America is in Brazil and involves three availability zones (unique datacenters). The company's São Paulo cloud region went live in 2011.
