Brazil’s Orizon signs biomethane plant financing deal

Bnamericas

Brazil’s Orizon Valorização de Resíduos signed a 267mn-real (US$43mn) financing deal with development bank Banco do Nordeste do Brasil (BNB) for the construction of a biomethane plant.

Located in Pernambuco state, the Jaboatão dos Guararapes project is in the advanced construction stage, the company said in a market disclosure.

The plant will have capacity of 130,000m3/d and the company has a contract with Pernambuco’s gas distributor Copergás for 60,000m3/d of the amount.

The gas will come from Orizon’s local eco-park, where it currently uses biogas from landfills to generate electricity.

Other projects

In 2024, Orizon closed a partnership with Urca Comercializadora de Energia to build new biomethane plants capable of producing a total of 180,000m3/d in São Gonçalo and Nova Iguaçu, in Rio de Janeiro state.

Also last year, Orizon announced it would install new biomethane plants in Fazenda RIo Grande, Guatapará and Piratininga, in São Paulo state.

The gas will come from Estre Ambiental’s landfills in the locations. Scheduled to come online in 2027, the plants will be able to produce a total of 195,000m3/d.

Meanwhile, Orizon is building the 20MW Barueri waste-to-energy plant in São Paulo, with capacity to treat 875t/d of solid urban waste.
