Brazil's Pecém port targeting 25% of Rotterdam's green hydrogen imports
Brazil’s Pecém port, in northeast state Ceará, plans to account for 25% of the green hydrogen that is expected to enter Europe through Rotterdam port in 2030.
The forecast was provided on Wednesday by Pecém’s CEO, Hugo Figueiredo (pictured), during the Hydrogen Congress for Latin America and the Caribbean (H2LAC) in Rio de Janeiro.
According to Figueiredo, the amount would be approximately 1Mt.
A partner of Rotterdam port, Pecém has MOUs with companies, such as H2 Green Power, Engie and Fortescue Future Industries, among others.
“We expect that final investment decisions [on green hydrogen production] will begin to be made next year,” Figueiredo said.
But output could also be directed to the domestic market, serving as a raw material for the fertilizer industry and for sustainable fuels in the maritime and aviation sectors.
Luis Viga, country manager of Fortescue Future Industries, said Brazil is capable of offering the world’s most competitive green hydrogen.
“Energy accounts for 70% of the cost of green hydrogen, and Brazil has a lot of renewable power,” he said.
Viga projected that the world will begin to price the costs of the energy transition and that money for fossil fuels is getting scarcer.
“That's why I believe in green hydrogen dropping to US$1.5-2/kg in the near future,” he said.
