Brazil's Samarco marks milestone on road to recovering full capacity
Brazilian iron ore pellet producer Samarco Mineração is advancing with its plans to return to full capacity.
The company reached the landmark of 20Mt produced since it resumed operations at the end of 2020 following a tailings dam collapse five years earlier.
"The company has resumed its operations without the use of tailings dams, and expects to reach 60% of capacity by 2025," the firm said in a statement.
Samarco – a joint venture between Vale and BHP – was involved in one of country's biggest mining disasters in 2015, when its Fundão tailings dam collapsed and destroyed two villages, killing 19 people and causing widespread environmental damage.
As a result, the company halted operations from late 2015 until December 2020.
This year Samarco said it its investing 1.6bn reais (US$277mn) in operations. "In addition to sustaining the business, funds are earmarked for the Germano pit and dam characterization project, works that are at an advanced stage, and innovation projects," the firm said.
The company expects to reach full capacity in 2028, with production estimated at 30Mt/y.
