Brazil's stolen, missing phones surpass 5mn

There are over 5.1mn handsets registered as stolen or missing in a special database created in 2000 by mobile operators in Brazil, according to the latest data from private carriers.

The number of devices reported to the so-called Brazilian registry of blocked mobile terminals (CEMI in Portuguese) represents 1.8% of the total active mobile lines in Brazil, according to figures from Brazilian telco association SindiTelebrasil.

In absolute figures, it represents as much the entire Costa Rican population.

Users can request their operator block not only a line, but also the device, by reporting the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of their phone.

According to the association, the unique identification code can be found when the user types *#06# on the device's keyboard.

At end-2014, Latin America had 709mn mobile connections, according to data from the GSM Association (GSMA).
