Brazil’s Suape LNG terminal to begin operations next year

The Suape port’s liquefied natural gas regasification terminal in Brazil’s Pernambuco state is set to begin operations in the second half of 2024.
The information was provided to BNamericas by Nilson Monteiro, who is Suape’s development and ports management director.
Still pending for the start-up are recovery and adaptation works on the pier that will receive the floating, storage and regasification unit, said Monteiro.
Currently under construction, the terminal will have a regasification capacity of up to 14Mm3/d (million cubic meters per day) of gas, which will be supplied by Shell.
With an investment of 2bn reais (US$400mn), the project is carried out by Brazilian holding Oncorp to supply fuel to the Termopernambuco thermoelectric plant.
The 498MW plant won a backup capacity tender that electric power regulator Aneel held in 2021.
Part of the gas will be distributed in Pernambuco by local concessionaire Copergás.
At the time of publication, Oncorp had not responded to a request for comments by BNamericas.
Besides the Suape project, Brazil has a number of LNG regasification terminals that are being built or in different stages of development and studies.
