Brazil's Vale turns to AI to help protect the Amazon
Brazilian mining giant Vale said it will use artificial intelligence to help prevent fires and deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.
The company’s fund, Fundo Vale, signed a partnership with Microsoft and local NGO Instituto do Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amazônia (Imazon) to create an AI tool that anticipates information from regions at high risk of deforestation and fires in the Amazon.
The tool will analyze various data, such as topography, land cover, urban infrastructure, legal and illegal roads, as well as socioeconomic data to identify potential changes in land use trends, Vale said in a press release.
Vale's largest iron ore mine, Carajás, is located in the Amazon region and the AI tool is part of efforts by the company to increase its focus on environmental and social issues.
Vale, which already protects 800,000ha of forests in the Amazon, recently announced that it plans to conserve and restore another 500,000ha of native forest by 2030. The initiative is part of the company's strategy of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
