Brief: Costa Rica unveils investment to combat drought

Costa Rica earmarked 5bn colones (US$8.38mn) in next year's budget to address the drought in the country's Chorotega region, according to president Carlos Alvarado (pictured).

At an event in Liberia, Guanacaste province, Alvarado added that another 44bn colones will be earmarked to address climate change-related emergencies.

The region, in the northern province of Guanacaste, has vast agriculture and depends on hydroelectric power generation. The hydro project, dubbed Paacume, set to be implemented in the area, will also help to address the effects of drought.
