Brief: JISCO starts alumina shipments from Jamaica plant
China's Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company (JISCO) announced the first shipment of alumina from its Alpart operation in Jamaica.
The 35,000t shipment was due to leave Port Kaiser Friday (Dec 29), the Jamaica Gleaner reported, quoting a company release.
JISCO is investing US$3bn in an expansion of the Alpart plant to lift output to 2.0Mt/y alumina by 2020 from 1.65Mt.
The company acquired Alpart from Russia's Rusal in November 2016. Operations were halted in 2009 due to falling metal prices.
