Brief: President Trump to skip Summit of the Americas
The White House has said that President Donald Trump will skip the Summit of the Americas, due to be held in Peru this week.
Officials said Trump will remain in the US to "oversee the American response" to a suspected chemical attack in Syria. Vice president Mike Pence is scheduled to attend in his place.
The summit, which will be the eighth held, gets underway on Friday. Summits - which bring together heads of state from the Americas to discuss matters affecting the region - have been held 1994. The last was held in Panama, in 2015.
