Brief: Rio de Janeiro drought forces water supply restrictions

Rio de Janeiro state will reduce the volume of water supply for certain regions due to the ongoing drought.

The state water utility Cedae will reduce the volume of water supply for cities of Itaboraí, São Gonçalo, Niterói, and Maricá. The government said that it was working to avoid supply restrictions as the level of water in the Imunana-Laranjal system fell, but the continued drought now forced the measure.

"Due to the worsening situation in the last several days, it will be necessary to carry out exceptional operational maneuvers which, consequently, will reduce water production in the Imunana-Laranjal system," Cedae said.
