Budget cuts set to hit water services in Mexico City

Mexico's 2017 federal budget involves a 70% cut to funding for water-related projects in the capital, according to the head of the city's water authority.

The cuts will imply the cancellation of new projects, basic maintenance and rehabilitation works, and will have a direct impact on service, Ramón Aguirre, director of Mexico City water authority Sacmex, told Radio Formula's Atando Cabos show on Wednesday.

Earlier in the week, Mexico City mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera described the proposed federal budget cuts for 2017 as unfair to the city.

The projected spending for waterworks at the federal level for next year was also reduced. National water authority Conagua will be allocated 26bn pesos (US$1.3bn), down from 40.9bn pesos this year.
