PRESS RELEASE from Cader and Climate Group
August 28, 2024

The event, which was attended by government and corporate authorities, established itself as one of the most important events of the year in terms of renewable energy for the private sector, particularly in terms of accelerating the shift towards carbon-free electricity networks worldwide by 2040.

The Argentine Chamber of Renewable Energies (CADER) and Climate Group launched the RE100 program in Argentina during an exclusive event at the British Embassy in Buenos Aires. The event called 'Accelerating Corporate Climate Action. Presentation of the RE100 initiative, on the road to a cleaner and more competitive energy matrix' brought together large companies and government authorities in the country, with the aim of promoting climate action, accelerating the energy transition and achieving policies that allow overcoming barriers for corporate buyers to obtain renewable electricity at a reasonable cost.

RE100 is a global leadership movement accelerating the shift to zero-carbon electricity grids worldwide by 2040, where over 400 of the world’s most influential companies commit to sourcing 100% of their global electricity consumption from renewable sources, driving global change and creating the demand signal for green energy.

CADER will play the role of local implementing partner of the RE100 program in Argentina, following the agreement signed at the beginning of July this year, after more than a year of negotiations, including meetings at the 28th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) and at the Climate Group offices in London (England).

During the event, exhibitors highlighted the priority of implementing the RE100 program at a national level, given the environmental commitments assumed by the country, the potential to decarbonize the matrix and the possibility of creating an electricity market structure that allows direct trade between corporate buyers of all sizes and renewable electricity suppliers.

“Investing in renewable energy can create jobs, generate cheaper, carbon-free electricity, and help develop our economies while we seek to keep within reach the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees and meeting the commitments of the Paris Agreement,” said Kirsty Hayes, British ambassador to Argentina.

“We would like to thank Climate Group and the British Embassy in Buenos Aires for their support in holding this event. We are happy to begin this partnership that allows us to generate synergies for the development of the renewable sector,” added Martín Parodi, president of CADER.

In addition, Climate Group has reinforced its commitment to work in Argentina with public service companies and electricity providers to provide options for obtaining renewable energy at a reasonable cost, promote direct investments in projects and support a credible and transparent system to issue, track and certify Environmental Attribute Certificates (EAC) at competitive prices.

“RE100 brings together more than 400 global companies, all committed to sourcing 100% of their electricity from renewables. With CADER as our local partner, we look forward to welcoming our first Argentinian company to the RE100 campaign. Together, we will help RE100 members and large Argentinian corporations gain greater access to renewable electricity and accelerate the country’s decarbonisation process,” said Ollie Wilson, Director of RE100, Climate Group.

“This is our first partnership in Latin America and we look forward to bringing our members’ voice to governments and regulators to unlock access to affordable renewable electricity. With CADER, we aim to have the greatest possible impact, working in all provinces of the country,” he concluded.

Also participating in the meeting were members of the CADER Board of Directors, representatives of Climate Group, the British Embassy in Buenos Aires, national and provincial government officials, and representatives of large corporations with a presence in Argentina.
