Wärtsilä landed an EPC contract to deliver a 132MW plant to Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) that is due to begin commercial operations at the end of summer 2019.

"It [the plant] will be fueled primarily with liquefied natural gas (LNG) when it becomes locally available, but can in the meantime operate on conventional heavy fuel oil," Wärtsilä said in a statement.

BLP will install the plant at its Station A on the island of New Providence, which is being stripped of current slow speed reciprocating engines to make room for the new generating sets.

Following consultation, Puerto Rico's public-private partnerships authority published the regulation that will guide the procurement, evaluation, selection, negotiation and award of partnership contracts with power authority PREPA and the sale of PREPA power generation assets as part of the island's push to revamp the sector.
