Chancay port in its final stage of construction
Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) press release

A few days before the inauguration of the Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Raúl Pérez Reyes, supervised the progress of this strategic work, located in Huaral, which will position Peru as a key player in international trade in Latin America.
The project, whose first stage has required an investment of more than US$ 1.4 billion, has four docks (with a total length of 1,500 m), 27 specialized cranes and 40 autonomous vehicles, as well as the capacity to receive the largest ships in the world with a full load.
“The Chancay port is 98% complete and will be ready to open on November 14. For the Government, this new infrastructure is a priority, as it will consolidate Peru as the main port hub in the South Pacific with direct access to the Asian continent,” said the head of the MTC.
The project is divided into three main components: the operational zone, which includes the marginal docks, maritime access channels and container storage areas; the access zone, which includes the outer port, customs inspection area, administrative offices and logistics services; and, finally, a 1.8 km tunnel, which will provide a segregated road corridor for cargo transit. This underground viaduct still needs minor works to be completed.
Currently, most cargo between Peru and Asia or Oceania is transported first through Central America and North America. With the port of Chancay, vessels of 18,000 to 24,000 TEUs (20-foot containers) will be able to reach their destination directly, in approximately 25 days.
This reduction in the current transport time (35 days) will be reflected in the reduction of transport costs, making Peruvian products more competitive in the international market. In addition, it will allow imported products to be more affordable for local consumers.
The new port infrastructure will also allow for the redistribution of cargo from countries such as Chile, Ecuador and Colombia, among others, that are coming from or heading to China, as it will imply savings in logistics costs and delivery times.
The Chancay port will also benefit thousands of families in the corridor from the center of the country to the coast, generating an economic and social impact equivalent to USD 4.5 billion annually, or 1.8% of GDP. This will translate into thousands of jobs in sectors such as international trade, fishing, food, beverages, metalworking and more.
The inspection was attended by the deputy general managers of Cosco Shipping Ports Peru, Carlos Tejada and Gonzalo Ríos; the vice minister of Transport, Ismael Sutta; and the president of the Board of Directors of the National Port Authority, Juan Carlos Paz.
The project, managed by Cosco Shipping Ports, is a priority for the Government. In this regard, the Ministry of Transport and Communications is promoting the execution of complementary works, such as overpasses on the Panamericana Norte, the Chancay-Chancayllo bypass, the Serpentín-Variante Pasamayo dual carriageway and the Lima-Barranca train, among others, with the purpose of improving connectivity in Huaral and strengthening the Callao-Chancay logistics corridor.
