Chiapas to receive US$33mn power investment

Mexico's federal energy company CFE has signed agreements with Chiapas state government establishing investments of 367mn pesos (US$33mn) in energy efficiency and rural power, the CFE said in a statement. Investment in maintaining and improving public lighting will be 187mn over two years, and the remaining 180mn pesos will be spent on providing power to 118 rural communities, benefiting a population of some 36,500 by May 2004. The CFE is also undertaking a 124mn peso project to provide power to six rural communities in the Selva Lacondona area. The project includes a 94km transmission line and a 20,000kVA substation.
