Chile approves public transport fare hike for July

The Panel of Public Transportation Experts, using the powers granted to it by Law No. 20,378 that establishes the National Subsidy for Public Transportation, has determined an increase of $20 for the month of July. Likewise, by virtue of the calculation formula, an increase of $10 will be generated in both the student and senior rate, while the Maximum Monthly Amount will also vary until reaching $40,000.

This increase applies to subsidized Bus, Metro and Train Nos-Estación Central services in the 36 communes of the city of Santiago where it operates. The new values will come into force at 00:00 on Sunday, July 14, 2024.

According to what was indicated by the panel, the rate adjustment responds to the review of the increase in costs of elements of the rate indexer, highlighting among them the price of oil, the value of the dollar, inflation, among others.

Finally, it is worth remembering that the fare freeze has accumulated a mismatch between the fare and the real price of the ticket of $240, generating a permanent cost. This amount is financed through the Public Transportation subsidy.


