Chile declares drought emergency in 2 regions

Chile's interior ministry decided to reactivate a measure that declared the entire Coquimbo region (IV) and 14 municipalities of Valparaíso region (V) as catastrophe areas due to drought.

The measure was first launched in 2012 and has been used many times since.

The measure had been lifted this year as heavier-than-normal rains improved the hydrological situation in the area, even causing floods in the case of Coquimbo.

In order to deal with water shortages in Valparaíso, the government has launched tenders for the Las Palmas and Catemu water reservoirs, worth over US$600mn in total.

A third reservoir for the region, located in the Los Ángeles area of Valparaíso, is expected to be launched by March.
