Chile launches prequalification for US$64mn tunnel
Firms will have until October 30 to participate in prequalification for construction of the La Grupa II road tunnel in Chile’s Valparaíso region, according to a notice from the roadworks office of the public works ministry (MOP).
The project, which has a reference budget of 60.4bn pesos (US$64mn) involves building a 1.35km tunnel parallel to the existing La Grupa tunnel on route E-35 in Cabildo. The current tunnel was built in 1907 and was originally for a rail line, documents show.
Works also involve improving the access roads, 1.8km to the north and 3.1km to the south.
The old tunnel will be left for pedestrian and bicycle use, according to local firm Zañartu Ingenieros, which carried out the engineering studies.
