Chile looks to attract US$2.5bn in datacenter investment
Chile expects to attract US$2.5bn in datacenter investment during the coming years as it prepares a national plan to promote the fast-growing industry.
The country currently hosts 22 datacenters and 28 more are expected, according to President Gabriel Boric, speaking at the 7th international forum of investment promotion agency InvestChile.
Boric said the plan will be unveiled in September and it will include input from the business community and civil society, as well as public and local institutions. It will provide guidelines to "generate agreements between the State and the private sector so that the datacenter investment is profitable and efficient, and environmentally responsible.”
Last year, the construction of a Google datacenter was stopped by an environmental court, which concluded that environmental review agency SEA had carried out a poor evaluation of the impacts on the central Santiago aquifer.
NEW PROJECTS
Two major projects have been announced so far this year. In February, SEA gave AWS the green light to begin construction of a US$205mn datacenter in Santiago’s Padre Hurtado district.
In April, US-based Equinix filed an environmental impact assessment for the construction of ST5, the company's fifth datacenter in Chile. To be built in Santiago's Pudahuel district, ST5 will require an investment of US$130mn.
