Chile port operator ITI’s 4G network due to be ready in March

Chile’s Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI) port operator is building a private 4G network that is expected to be turned on in March.

The private network is part of a digital transformation project that includes the implementation of a new terminal operating system (TOS) mobile software and the complete renewal of mobile devices, such as handhelds and tablets in reach stackers, ITI’s systems chief Ignacio Méndez Céspedes said on social media.

“Our private connectivity network will improve communications and data transmission, providing greater dynamism to our operations,” Méndez Céspedes said in a press release.

The company did not provide details about the size of the project, vendors or investments.

ITI will be the first terminal in the north of Chile to have private LTE infrastructure.

In 2022, San Antonio Terminal Internacional (STI), in central region Valparaíso, announced it selected Nokia to deploy the first industrial-grade LTE private network in a port terminal in Chile.

The STI private network is part of the terminal’s investment commitments to extend its concession to 2030. The project demanded an investment of US$2mn, according to local media reports.
