Chile seals US$140mn deal to continue Chacao bridge

Chile’s public works ministry (MOP) sealed a 109bn-peso (US$141mn) agreement with the concessionaire in charge of the Chacao bridge, ending a conflict that briefly halted works on the US$740mn project.
Both parties had previously agreed to continue with the works while the dispute was resolved, although the progress of construction had slowed considerable due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Consorcio Puente Chacao had originally requested US$200mn from the authorities, citing cost overruns caused by changes to the bridge design.
The amount that the ministry agreed to be paid to the group recognizes additional works related to safety features on the structure, the MOP said in a release.
The 2.63km bridge is currently 20% complete and once it is finished it will connect the island of Chiloé (Los Lagos region) to the Chilean mainland.
