Chile sharpens focus on bank IT security

Chile announced a package of measures to help beef up cybersecurity in the financial services sector, particularly the banking segment.

The news comes after commercial lender Banco de Chile was targeted by hackers who stole US$10mn from it and whose actions led to service disruptions for clients.

In a statement, the finance ministry said a multi-stakeholder group involving watchdog chiefs and other officials would implement initiatives to "modernize prevention tools and protocols."

Finance minister Felipe Larraín (pictured, standing) said officials would analyze international best practices and consult an "international body."

"The group established that, while the [Banco de Chile] incident has been resolved and the affected bank is operating normally, there exists space to modernize and enhance contingency protocols and the regulatory and supervisory framework in the area of cybersecurity," the statement said.

Colombian watchdog Superfinanciera recently issued instructions to financial services sector players concerning the management of cybercrime risk.
