Chile unveils Cau Cau bridge repairs plan
Chile's public works minister Juan Andrés Fontaine unveiled the plan to repair the Cau Cau bascule bridge in the southern Los Ríos region, following its partial reopening in August after three years of closure due to technical failures.
A source from the public works ministry (MOP) told BNamericas that a tender date for the works hasn't been set yet, although it has previously been stated that it would take place next year.
Fontaine said that the works will take 24 months and demand a 4.5bn-peso (US$7mn) investment.
The decision to repair the bridge, instead of demolishing and rebuilding it from scratch, was backed by studies from US-based firm Modjeski & Masters (M&M), the ministry said in a press release.
Repairs entail the replacement of the bridge's lifting system, as well as all electric installations. A passage from the study quoted by the ministry points out that, with proper maintenance, the repaired bridge could operate for 50 years.
