Chile US$350mn standalone battery storage system submitted for review

Bnamericas

A US$350mn standalone battery storage system is seeking the environmental green light in Chile.

Filed by Plus Energía, the project is planned for Coquimbo region and involves installing 200MW of batteries with five-hour injection duration.

Work is penciled in to start in November, according to documents filed with environmental review agency SEA.

Energy storage systems can help combat curtailment and support the ongoing decarbonization of the grid.

The government is aiming to have a portfolio of 2GW confirmed projects - taking into account both those built or being built and those with a final investment decision and financing secured - this year.

The pipeline of projects is growing.

According to March data from Chilean renewables and storage association Acera, 364MW of battery storage capacity is operating, while 240MW is in the testing phase, 1.05GW is under construction, 2.23GW has an environmental license and 6.23GW is in the environmental review phase. The bulk of planned battery capacity is linked to solar PV projects (3.24GW), to solar PV-wind hybrid installations (1.42GW) and standalone (1.32GW).

Chile’s 2023 regulated power supply auction contains incentives for incorporating energy storage.
