Chile's ClaroVTR incorporates OnNet Fibra network

The ClaroVTR joint venture signed a 15-year agreement with Telefónica and KKR's fiber optics company OnNet Fibra, which will allow migrating cable modem customers to fiber optics.

“This new fiber optics network will allow us to regain our leadership in the internet, which, added to our current leadership in entertainment, will allow us to offer our customers the best, most innovative and most competitive internet and television experience in the country,” ClaroVTR head Alfredo Parot said in a statement.

Under the agreement, 4.3mn homes passed with fiber – the entire OnNet Fibra network – will be added to the networks of Claro and VTR. OnNet recently acquired Entel's fiber network for US$432mn in a deal that allows the latter to keep using the infrastructure.

Latest figures from regulator Subtel, from September 2023, show that Claro had 246,960 and VTR 971,030 modem clients.

Additionally, 115,049 homes connected to VTR fiber and 20,960 to Claro fiber will be incorporated.

Integration with OnNet networks begins immediately, according to the press release.

OnNet plans to spend US$120mn in the next three years to consolidate its growth, according to local newspaper El Mercurio. It aims to reach 5mn homes passed. 

DirecTV also uses the OnNet network for broadband services.
