Chile’s Codelco submits US$30mn tailings project for approval

Chile’s state copper miner Codelco submitted to environmental regulator SEA the environmental impact assessment for the US$30.2mn complementary hydraulic works for the Barahona N°2 tailings dam at its El Teniente division in central O’Higgins region.

The project aims to improve the emergency landfill of the tailings dam as well as the entry of rainwater, following recommendations of mining watchdog Sernageomin during an inspection conducted in 2017.

Works are expected to start in September 2021, generating up to 276 jobs, and be completed in 2H22.

Operations at El Teniente’s Barahona N°1 and Barahona N°2 dams ended in 1928 and 1936, respectively. But Barahona N°2 is currently used as a deposit in case of emergency due to operational or structural issues in the Colón-Colihues section of the canal that transports tailings to the Carén reservoir (pictured).

The SEA is currently reviewing an EIA for an engineering and construction update for Carén.

According to figures provided by the mining ministry, Chile has 742 tailing dams, of which 636 are abandoned or inactive.
