Chipset shortage to continue through 2021 – Ericsson

Bnamericas

The chipset shortage will continue into 2022, Ericsson CEO Börje Ekholm said during the Unboxed Office 2021 event.

Ekholm said the company’s supply chain diversification has "limited effects" of the shortage so Ericsson could keep up equipment supply.

But “as we digitize, we are going to use more and more chipsets. So I think we have to continue increasing production capacity,” Ekholm said.

Market research firm Gartner recently said some supply problems could last until the fourth quarter of 2022.

According to IDC, the semiconductor market will grow 12.5% in 2021 to US$522bn, despite the problems.

The semiconductor market for computer systems (servers and PCs) increased 17.3% in 2020 while the market for telephones grew 9.1% driven by the rise in the price of 5G semiconductors that offset the fall in device sales. The consumer market (tablets, headphones, gaming consoles, among others) rose 7.7%, according to IDC.

In the second quarter of 2020, sales in the automotive segment recovered and revenue growth of 13.6% is expected for this year.
