Coamms requests Mides to hold off from closing landfill

Bnamericas
San Salvador's metropolitan area mayors' council Coamms has asked solid waste management concessionaire Mides to reconsider closing the Nejapa sanitary landfill within 30 days, newspaper El Diario de Hoy reported. The closing of the sanitary landfill would come as a result of conflicts between Mides and San Salvador's 10 municipalities, which allege Nejapa is not handling the city's waste satisfactorily. In return, Mides alleges municipalities owe it US$1mn in back fees for waste services provided at Nejapa, which has reduced funds for undertaking further improvement works at the sanitary landfill. Nejapa landfill receives some 450,000t/y of residential waste from greater San Salvador's 10 municipalities and has been operating since 1999.
