Cochilco sees US$3.06/lb copper in 2018
Chilean state copper commission Cochilco has lifted its 2018 price forecast to US$3.06/lb due to vulnerability of mine supply as multiple operations in Peru and Chile enter collective contract negotiations.
The increase from a previous 2018 forecast of US$2.95/lb is also supported by Chinese restrictions on the import of certain types of copper scrap and temporary shutdowns of smelters in the Asian country for environmental reasons, Cochilco executive VP Sergio Hernández said in a release.
He added that expectations of continued US dollar depreciation and copper's exposure to investment funds, which has raised price volatility, are also price-supportive.
Cochilco forecasts a refined copper market deficit of 175,000t in 2018 and 97,000t in 2019.
For 2019 the commission expects the price of copper to average US$3.11/lb.
