Codelco submits EIS for US$900mn mine life extension

Chilean state copper miner Codelco submitted an environmental impact study for an US$868mn plan to extend the life of its Gabriela Mistral division in Antofagasta region, which includes a water transition program and a chlorinated leaching process.

The initiative aims to produce 150,000t/y of copper cathodes until 2055 and involves a two-year closure phase that will end in 2057, the EIS presented to environmental review agency SEA states.

Codelco said the water transition plan involves shifting away from using continental waters starting in 2029 and to stop using them altogether in 2035 and use water purchased from “third parties that have been authorized and environmentally approved.”

The mine currently produces around 110,000t/y.

The full EIS can be seen here (in Spanish).
