Codetel launches CDMA 1X network, BREW services

Bnamericas
Dominican Republic telco Codetel launched a CDMA2000 1XRTT network this week, the sixth Latin American operator to offer data services with a BREW mobile applications platform, according to a statement from US telecoms vendor Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM). Codetel will offer services over Qualcomm's BREW platform under the "Uno de Codetel" brand. BREW operates over the 1X network and lets wireless subscribers download applications and content such as games, ring tones, location-based services and business applications wirelessly to their mobile phones. Codetel is a subsidiary of US telco Verizon (NYSE: VZ). Verizon Wireless operates a 1X network in the US and has deployed others in its subsidiaries in Puerto Rico and Venezuela. In Latin America Brazil's Vivo and the BellSouth subsidiaries in Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Panama are offering BREW.
