Codetel signs Nortel for IP network

Bnamericas
Dominican Republic telecoms operator Codetel has awarded Canadian equipment supplier Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT) a contract to implement a voice over IP network, the companies said in a statement. The network should be ready early 2004 and will allow Codetel to offer new services such as advanced contact centers and virtual private networks, as well as transferring local, long distance and data traffic for corporate and residential clients to a single, packet-switched infrastructure. Codetel is the first service provider to deploy new IP capabilities on Nortel's Succession Media Gateway 9000 solution, which is the component responsible for the transition of voice traffic onto the packet network. The operator is a unit of US telecoms giant Verizon (NYSE: VZ).
