Colombia awards US$230mn concession for Cartagena airport

Colombia awarded a concession contract to Termotecnica Coindustrial for the operation, expansion and renovation of the Rafael Núñez international airport in Cartagena.

The works will require an investment of 922bn pesos (US$230mn), said Jonathan Bernal, structuring VP at national infrastructure agency (ANI).

Under the contract the concessionaire must carry out the studies and detailed design in one year and construction in 2.5 years. It will be in charge of the airport's operation and maintenance for 8.5 years.

The works include a new 17,360m2 terminal building and the 2,814m2 remodeling of the existing terminal, maintenance of the control tower and some offices, as well as infrastructure repairs.

They also entail a 15,740m2 expansion of the airport's commercial area, creating 11,683m2 parking space for 330 vehicles, and the construction of a road parallel to the runway.

The works are expected to kick off in February next year.

The airport handled more than 7mn passengers last year and is currently operated by Sacsa.
