Colombia to auction new blocks of mining concessions in 2021
Over 30 potential blocks of mining concessions will be auctioned by the Colombian government starting in 2021, as a part of a strategic area allocation process for new projects led by the national mining agency (ANM).
The process is still being reviewed but will include 18 areas in Antioquia department, 12 in Tolima and seven between Cesar and La Guajira, according to Forbes.
The government aims to increase mining exploration by attracting more investment in projects related to gold, copper, nickel, and emeralds.
According to figures from ANM, by 2030 Colombia could reach production of 2Mt of copper.
Earlier this week, mining and energy minister Diego Mesa said that the mining and energy sectors have 33 priority projects with 36tn pesos in investments (US$9.5bn).
According to Mesa, the mining sector represents over 20% of the country’s total exports and 15% of foreign direct investment.
