Colombia’s EPM unveils hydrogen export plans
Colombian multiutility Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) has announced plans for a hydrogen pilot project as it seeks to further diversify its clean energy portfolio.
The facility will produce green hydrogen from electrolysis at the wastewater treatment plant of EPM’s subsidiary Aguas Nacionales in the Medellín metropolitan area, the company said in a statement
It did not say how much would be invested in the initiative, nor when it would begin operating.
According to EPM, the pilot forms part of the company’s plans for a hydrogen hub at the Ruta N innovation complex in Medellin’s northern suburbs.
The hub will promote studies that aim to develop technology and value chains for local hydrogen production, it said.
"EPM's goal is to build a business plan that allows it to develop specific projects for the production and commercialization of green hydrogen, both for export and for the national market,” the statement said.
It added that EPM aimed to capitalize on Colombia’s strategic location to export the fuel to European and Asian markets.
