Construction of Jamaica's 3rd LNG-fired plant to begin next year

Jamaica power utility JPS reported that groundbreaking of the country's third LNG-fired power generation plant is scheduled for next year.

The company made the announcement following the signing of a PPA (in picture) with New Fortress South Power Holdings which will build a 94MW station at bauxite and alumina producer Jamalco's alumina refinery.

BNamericas reported recently that New Fortress submitted an environmental impact assessment for a natural gas-fired combined heat and power project to the country's National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA).

NEPA held a mandatory public meeting in July for the project as part of the permitting process.

At the meeting, the project's environmental consultant said the expectation was to have the NEPA permit in place by year-end with operations startup penciled in for June 2019.

In April, JPS broke ground on its 190MW Old Harbour Bay natural gas-fired project, the second such plant in the country after the company began operations of the 120MW Bogue station in November.
