Consumer watchdog backs Puerto Rico battery storage plan
Puerto Rican power transmission and distribution operator Luma Energy’s proposal to fast-track battery energy storage systems (BESS) received a further boost.
“We agree with Luma that the establishment of BESS under this plan has great potential to provide currently needed storage capacity in a short period of time and at a lower cost, compared to the process required in new projects,” according to the island’s independent consumer protection office OIPC.
OIPC made the comment following consultation by energy regulator PREB after the latter approved the “accelerated storage addition program” or ASAP which envisions adding up to 360MW.
The consumer watchdog argues that the program would improve resiliency, reliability and service quality as well as lower prices but asked for additional information related to the service cost calculation used by Luma.
Meanwhile, PREB released a Luma report, available in the Documents box in the top-right corner of the screen, updating Puerto Rico’s electric vehicle adoption plan.
