Cosipa gains little from safeguard removal

Brazilian flat steelmaker Cosipa will obtain few benefits from the removal of the US safeguards on steel imports, company president Omar Silva Junior was quoted as saying in business daily Valor Economico. He said the end of the safeguards will lift tariffs of some 30% on cold-rolled steel, but the Brazilian steelmaker is currently exporting the product to China. On Thursday (Dec.4), US President George Bush announced the removal of the Section 201 safeguards, 16 months ahead of schedule, to avoid a trade war with the EU. The 20-month-old tariffs and quotas on steel imports were ruled illegal by the World Trade Organization (WTO) last month. Cosipa's main exports to the US continue to be affected by antidumping duties on heavy plates and hot-rolled products. Sao Paulo-based Cosipa, part of local steel group Usiminas, has steelmaking capacity of 4.5Mt.
