Costa Rica airport runway works set to begin in March

The Costa Rican government awarded a US$41mn contract to repair and refurbish the runway at Daniel Oduber Quirós international airport in Guanacaste province, considered the second most important in the country.

Tender 2023PX-000239-0006500001, which can be seen on Costa Rica’s procurement platform SICOP, was awarded to local company Constructora MECO on December 12. The company will have 240 days to carry out the work.

Citing the national emergency committee (CNE), Infobae news outlet reported on Monday that the works are expected to begin in March.

“The works will allow Daniel Oduber airport to have a high-quality runway in optimal condition for large aircraft,” the report quoted the CNE as saying.

Capex is put at 21.9bn colones (US$41.1mn). The bidding process was published on October 23.

According to the tender documents, the funds will come from the CNE, as the airport – that started operations in 2012 – was damaged during tropical storm Bonnie, which struck Costa Rica in July 2022.
