Costa Rica construction firms call for changes to boost infra sector, economy

Costa Rica’s construction chamber (CCC) has proposed several changes to spur economic growth through more infrastructure projects and private investment.

At a recent conference, CCC suggested that the economy, industry, and commerce ministry (MEIC) step up its compliance efforts to ensure the effectiveness of regulations and measures aimed at reducing red tape.

It also called on all public sector institutions that are involved with the construction sector to review regulations, and for the public works and transport ministry (MOPT) to improve long-term planning to reduce cost overruns and project delays.

CCC recommended merging the three institutions that are part of the housing ministry (Invu, Banvhi, and Mivah) to reduce bureaucracy and improve efficiency and coordination.

To face the country's growing water problems CCC called for changes at state-owned water utility AyA, including improved strategic planning and investment management, as well as technological upgrades.

In terms of economic policy, the chamber wants to see strict spending control but an increase in public infrastructure investment. It is also opposed to any new taxes or increases to existing ones.
